Attack on TNA candidate Thambirajah
Published Date: 20/08/2013 (Tuesday)

TNA Provincial Council candidate P Thambirajah was attacked in Jaffna yesterday evening by a twelve-men group lead by the United People Freedom Alliance candidate Angajan Ramanathan. One of the suspect involved in the attack was Angajan’s father Ramanathan who went into hiding inside a Textile shop in the street.

According to Thambirajah, he could clearly identify Angajan who came with a pistol to assassinate him, but he was lucky to have escaped because the police came to the scene when the attackers were trying to pull him out of his vehicle. He said he also could identify Ramanathan. His car was badly damaged and the attackers had taken away the car keys.

Thambirajah kept on asking the police to arrest the suspect hiding inside the shop, but no action was taken. He said that he has managed to film the attack using his mobile phone which the attackers were trying to grab from his hand, but failed.

The evening attack was filmed by a passerby that shows Thambirajah was staging a sit-in in front of the textile shop to stop Ramanthan escaping and urging the police to go in and arrest him.

First election violation in the Jaffna peninsula recorded at 6.00 pm yesterday.
